tHE ARTS OF GOZAN-RYU

Gozan means five mountains.  The system was founded by Kawika Sensei after a life long journey of military and academic pursuits.  The Art of Gozan was a culmination  of years of of martial experience from fighting in the jungle of Vietnam, seven years with the elite Navy SEALs, certified case-director for the C.I.A. Counter terrorism task center and multiple degrees from ivy league universities.  This along with his vast experience as a martial artist make him uniquely qualified to design the Gozan System.

SHORInJIN- RYU   SAITO NINJUTSU

Fundamental to the Gozan Ryu is the unique art of  Shorinjin Ryu Saito Ninjutsu of Fukushima, Japan.  Saito Ninjutsu is an ancient and revered system of self-defense and self development which has been closely guarded by the Saito family of Japan for countless generations.  Prior to the opening of the first Academy in April, 1966, by Mark Saito Sr. the art had never been taught outside of the Saito family. Click on Gozan for more about the Art.

DAI  LAO HU  GUNG  FU

Kawika Sensei learned this Art during a two year sojourn  at a Ch’an Monastery in the New Territories.  It’s origins are Northern Shaolin.  It was taught to Sensei by Wen Shih a Ch’an Buddhist Priest.  I will say little here of the priest, Wen Shih, who was known as the Xuan Wu, or Dark Warrior.  He was sometimes known by the same name he gave me secretly – “Zhong K’uei” – Demon Chaser.  (The Zhong K’uei or exorcist was always depicted with a tiger – the Dai Lao Hu.)  In the book, I have offered small vignettes through which I have tried to describe a glimpse of his tiger spirit.  He was the most mysterious man I have ever met, as close to the spiritual monk depicted in fairy tales and mythology as I have found in “real life.”
